The Little Match Girl Chamber Opera is essentially a duodrama that can be performed in one or two acts. The composer has enabled presentation of this touching tale in the sparest of possible settings - two (or three) singers and an optional dancer perform alone at midnight at the deserted intersection of two walls with accompaniment by a single keyboard instrumentalist. Performances can be in virtually any kind of performing space. The Opera can be mounted by either professional companies or nonprofessional ensembles at a lower production cost than any other opera. Because of the demands of the role of The Little Match Girl (a soprano), that role may be divided between two singers, one to sing the arias and one to sing the ariosi. With the story's unique emphasis on the central role of the grandmother, the Opera has special appeal to both children and seniors.
